NATIONAL LIBRARIAN DAY CELEBRATION


 Dr. Shiyali Ramamrita Ranganathan (1892 – 1972) is known as the Father of Library Science in India. Born on August 12, 1892, in Shiyali, Tamil Nadu, he was originally a mathematics teacher but later devoted his life to libraries and information science.


Major Contributions:

Five Laws of Library Science (1931) – His most famous contribution, which shaped modern library services:


1. Books are for use.

2. Every reader his/her book.

3. Every book its reader.

4. Save the time of the reader.

5. The library is a growing organism.

August 12, his birthday, is celebrated as National Librarian Day in India.


He transformed libraries from book storage rooms into dynamic centers of learning.


He inspired generations of librarians to see their work as a service to society.
